You can even use it from the console. But the real reason is, that we got caught by the upstream version freeze of etch, (we wanted to upload version 2.15.0 originally). As I agree, that the current situation is suboptimal, I'll see if I can get the fixes back into the current version of g-v-m, or I'll add the versioned conflict as mentioned above, so people don't install it unintentionally.
