I don't understand what is lost by making this change. If this is a known issue, which bug is it a duplicate of? The fact that this is a FAQ for tasksel should tell us something.
I can appreciate the view that "average users" don't care about the name of the desktop, but nothing is lost by attaching gnome in parenthesis as suggested. It would still clear that they are going to install a desktop environment. "Average users" don't lose anything, and any user who is at all further advanced than "average" would be benefited.
