Upon further investigation, I can confirm Arne's report. With everything else remaining constant (all other openafs packages at 1.4.2-2 and kernel 2.6.17-2-686), reverting to the 1.4.2~fc4-3 openafs module does fix the problem. The symptoms seen correspond to recent -setpag reports on OpenAFS-devel list as reported in "OpenAFS and OpenSSH, PAM, tokens".
