Package: alsa-base Subject: alsa-base: fails to detect legacy cards, must run alsaconf Version: 1.0.8-7 Severity: important
This may not be your problem, but I'll report it in case it is...
The ALSA is unable to detect ISA legacy cards on startup. I use a CS4236B (Crystal Sound) chipset, but this problem also occurs with other legacy chipsets I've tested as well (the kernel was set up with the necessary modules). This has occured with other custom build versions (2.6.10) of the kernel I have used, so you may be including something in the Debian kernels that is not present in the kernel.org version.
Running alsaconf once the system is running will detect the card properly.
