Package: sox
Followup-For: Bug #382275

lame needs libmp3lame.so to encode MP3s, which is packaged by
Christian Marillat, and available from his debian-multimedia
repository. Would it not be possible to dynamically load this library
if available and use it with sox? From looking at the source, this
would seem to require a patch (to use dlload and friends) which I'd be
happy to look into if the maintainer was interested.
