The documentation in /etc/powersave/sleep is not complete in that regard, powersave checks for /proc/suspend2 and /sys/power/suspend2 and only fails if neither of the two exists. So, the problem must be somewhere else. Could you please send me /var/log/suspend2disk.log. Just to be sure: Do you have the hibernate package installed? Without, suspend2 will not work. And last but not least, why do you use suspend2 at all? I'd recommend uswsusp (if you use a kernel with an initrd) or the in kernel swsusp. It's much less hassle and better supported by powersave.
