IMHO, removing the packages is ok, as with the version in sarge, all packages except on i386 are silently broken (see the RC-bug 291426 for details why). So, if the now not building archs are removed, the package is better than the version currently in sarge. Also, the new version is required for using a 2.6-kernel, which is the default kernel on some archs.
