I tried a few additional tests on the subject hardware:
- To confirm that the hardware is functional, I booted the demo
version of Win Server 2003 that is currently on hda. Both network
cards came up and were visible within the rest of the local network.
The hardware *is* functional.
- To rule out an issue with the 2.6 kernel, I re-ran the installer
with the 2.4 kernel. It also did not detect the network hardware.
Thanks,

I've done further troubleshooting on this subject:
- I tried additional installs with the most recent Kubuntu, with an
earlier Etch net installer (from several months ago), with an Etch daily
build from 10/29/06, and with a Sarge net install disk. I also tried
booting the machine up with a knoppix disk. Knoppix and kubuntu were
unable to see the network cards. The Etch daily build gave me the same
symptoms as reported in my original trouble ticket. The earlier Etch
installer and the Sarge installer detected the RTL8139 cards, and loaded
the drivers, but were not able to connect to the local LAN through DHCP.
- I just tried switching out the PCI rtl8139 card with a US Robotics
NIC. My results were the same as reported in my original trouble ticket.
I would appreciate some feedback on this subject -- if nothing else, a
few suggestions on further troubleshooting tips would be nice. I'm all
out of clues.
Thanks,
Richard B.
