It might be the case that Splashy 0.1.8 is already too old ;-). I'm thinking 0.2.1 already. Otavio will upload 0.2.1 to Sid soon. For the meantime, use the 1.0 schema or simply open both theme.xml files with vimdiff and check the differences. It should be pretty obvious what you are missing in your own custom theme.
