Thanks for the obvious tip. I hadn't noticed it (it isn't particularly intuitive to me that ones status can be "not even connected" but I'll adjust easily enough and it saves on menu space which is good).
However, there is a small problem. It doesn't work (at least for me). If I go "offline", change networks and then go "online" I can't reconnect to my jabber server. Closing gaim and restarting allows me to log in once more so I didn't just hit downtime on the jabber server. I'm changing network interface (eth0 to wlan0), not just an IP address but presumably this has nothing to do with it.
