Yes, it solves the problem of killing /etc/init.d/rc. But unfortunately
something remained mounted; there was an "umount failed: Device or
resource busy" message, and then mdadm complained that the RAID arrays
were busy and could not be stopped. Unfortunately the machine powered
down too fast so I could not see the details.

Hmm, I could try to simply call "halt" manually instead of using the
GNOME menu, to prevent powering down the machine. Maybe this evening.
