i did some googling and unfortunately agree :(

but... i've reported a feature request to mysql about it:

http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=23550

and have another idea for how we could work around the problem in the
meantime:

- debootstrap a sarge chroot, and set it up for general use (/proc, etc)
- turn off the mysql server
- copy the old-format database into the chroot dir
- chroot into the chroot dir
- install the old version of mysql server
- turn it off if it turns itself on at installation
- copy the database files into /var/lib/mysql in the chroot dir
- turn it on
- convert them
- turn it off
- log out of the chroot dir
- move the old-format db's out of the "real" /var/lib/mysql
- copy the newly converted db's from the chroot dir to the "real"
- run mysql_upgrade

if you know anyone willing to volunteer some time to test this, i'd be
happy to hear it. if so, i can throw it into README.Debian and see
about getting it into etch.
