These say the file should be pretty big...

But this suggests it's pretty small.

(A) Do you have a core ulimit set?  Check "ulimit -c".

(B) Are you sure this is a mostly vanilla 2.6.18?  There were patches
in 2.6.19-git for a while which caused truncated core dumps.
