Heh, nice try, but env vars are part of the interface! Simple scenario of DOOM: a Debian Derivative FooBarIsh starts adding the env var by default, an user report an upstream bug where the program crashes, no error message. What does upstream do with the bug? Or, company X develops a new program that relies on the feature, and discovers later on that ups, it doesn't exist anywhere else.
