Yes, that's exactly the case. .local is the multicast DNS domain. All host names ending in .local are resolved exclusively via mDNS if nss-mdns is installed. > But I definitely need "search local" in resolv.conf. I am sorry, but I guess your setup is simply incompatible with Zeroconf/Bonjour/Rendezvous/mDNS/DNS-SD/Avahi. If you cannot fix your setup to use a different unicast DNS domain, then I guess you should probably deinstall Avahi and nss-mdns, or a least disable it. It won't work reliable in such a setup.
