I'm suspecting your fonts.conf file wasn't upgraded; without that,
fontconfig doesn't know where to put the cache files.
Can you check /etc/fonts/fonts.conf and make sure it has two lines like:
<!-- Font cache directory list -->
<cachedir>/var/cache/fontconfig</cachedir>
<cachedir>~/.fontconfig</cachedir>
