Which debconf frontend did you use? I notice that the Dialog frontend does not handle "backing up" correctly for Boolean templates (they do not have a "go back" button, only "yes" and "no", and Escape is not handled as "go back" as well), and that the question for root and postmaster mail recipient does not allow "backing up" as well as this is not handled inside our main debconf loop.
