Can you provide lspci and lsusb output? Do you have another system (same or different) running the same kernel that you can try plugging the drive into? Can you try a newer kernel from unstable and see if it has the problem? Do you have a different USB drive you try plugging in the system? These things might help narrow down the problem, please post whatever results you have time to gather. FYI There are some known problems with certain usb chipsets in 2.6.8, SiS in particular.
