more than 5 minutes, and after 2-3 refreshes, reproducable all the times
with the hardware specs I mentioned. The easiest way to see it used to 
be : minimize the window and then maximise it. It was unable even to refresh 
and the only thing you could see was white windows.

The mainstream did a lot of work fixing things in the GIF code since last 
December. Last week I got a few emails that some related bugs have been 
resolved (mozilla.org's bug 178809 and 105370). 
I downloaded the nightly builds from mozilla's ftp site, and apparently 
Firefox does not have this problem since 2005-03-11. It raises medium to high 
load with the animations (gifs or flash), but it does not hangs, and for sure 
you do not have to kill it after 5 minutes.
