BTW, the change in behaviour after installing/uninstalling vim-gnome is probably due to the postinst of vim and the fact that the vim-gnome alternative has an higher priority than the plain vim. You can test the different behaviour by running /usr/bin/vim.basic and compare it with /usr/bin/vim.gnome.
