I'm also experiencing this behaviour, and as per Andrew De Ponte's comment, I believe it is the same fontconfig problem that was fixed in thunderbird in bug 388001 (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=388001). Could we please use the same patch to fix?
