The /usr/bin/gs link: $ ls -l /usr/bin/gs /etc/alternatives/gs lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 2006-08-27 12:21 /etc/alternatives/gs -> /usr/bin/gs-esp lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 2004-11-17 14:17 /usr/bin/gs -> /etc/alternatives/gs ........ and I have now changed the gs link to point to gs-gpl, which solved the issue (at least the generated PS files with pdftops show the font correctly).
