Do you remember (or can you find out) which version of the fam package did you upgrade from? The current stable version, 2.7.0-6sarge1, does have the correct prerm file and should (according to Section 6.6 of Debian Policy) stop famd before upgrade. If you can find out what the old version of the package was, it would help me tremendously in tracking down and fixing the problem.
