I have a file named /tmp/thecall.pdf. If I run
gv /tmp/thecall.pdf
then type + to zoom in, I get an error dialog box:

The screen is blank from then on; the only way to recover is to close gv.
If I do any of the following, gv works fine:
cd /tmp; gv thecall.pdf
cd /tmp; gv ./thecall.pdf
cd /; gv tmp/thecall.pdf
cd /; gv ./tmp/thecall.pdf
The problem appears to occur only with absolute pathnames.
