There has been an attempt. Look for install-info in the debian-dpkg
mailing list (months May, June, July in
http://lists.debian.org/debian-dpkg/).
Due to lack of time, need of transition, short timeslot before the freeze,
I did not make much progress.
Feel free to remind me of this issue after the Etch release.
Will try to do. If the freeze is the obstacle - isn't there a way for you to maintain a separate version for "experimental" without having it pushed into Etch?
Regarding the severity of the bug, 'important' means "a bug which has a
major effect on the usability of a package, without rendering it
completely unusable to everyone".
In that case, the bug do not have a major effect on the usability of dpkg.
It is more a wishlist bug requesting gqthe support of the new info
format.
I reached this bug after getting really annoyed that commands like "info chroot" (which are recommended by chroot(8)) don't work but instead I have to type "info coreutils chroot". The maintainers of these packages (coreutils?) blame this bug on this situation. They won't mention the work-around to reach the info pages since it's "not their bug" and in the meantime I was left for a few months without access to the info pages for coreutils simply because I wasn't aware of the workaround.
