My mistake - when I backported code from CVS to do large files, I seem
to have slipped up and included man page changes; in the CVS version,
-9 is the default IIRC. I've got a few man page changes in the queue, and
will hopefully send them to my sponsor sometime this week. Thanks for
the feedback.

By the way, the relevant line that controls the default compression
level is main.c:262, if you're interested.
