I suppose it did, like it provides /etc/news/server now.

I read that the server is now specified in that file instead of /etc/nntpserver.

However, the man page of the package (tin 1.9.2+20060621)

"      -r          Read  news  remotely from the default NNTP server specified
                  in the environment variable $NNTPSERVER or contained in the
                  file /etc/nntpserver. "

still refer to /etc/nntpserver instead of its new location.
