Why, if the packages using /var/run/<directory>/ are updated to create these directories if they are missing after boot? As far as I can see, there are not very many such packages including directories in /var/run/ as part of the package (crack and crack-md5 according to apt-file), and probably a few more creating a directory in the postinst. Moving these directories to tmpfs will make it easier for LTSP and other stateless workstation environment too. I expect the new sysvinit package to be uploaded to unstable in about a week.
