I have no problems with ALSA 1.0.11.
You can define quite more than only the old dmix behavior in asoundrc ;) Googleling "(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC shm" gives some 64bit related problems, but nothing really helpful. Anyway, in 1.0.12 libasound2 configuration (/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf) was slightly modified. Could you please stop all sound daemons (esd in your case?) and retry aplay or whatever?
