Shouldn't there be an error, in order to test whether tex is running interactively, something like iii \blubber{} aaa \bye This gives here: $ pdftex -interaction batchmode a.tex; echo $? This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4) \write18 enabled. entering extended mode 1 $ So it looks okay.
