The problem seems to be deeper than that. In fact, it's an interaction problem between matplotlib-numpy and numeric.
python-gdal is python-numeric dependant. Matplotlib can use either python-numeric or python-numpy. When matplotlib is configured to use python-numpy and your script uses gdal and matplotlib, every call to methods from python-gdal fail or sends bad results. I can provide an example if needed.
