Hi I tried to reproduce your problem and I did not get any problem, either using the -via switch or normally. I can not see any problem with this...
Both these works, and it is put into the tty. xvnc4viewer -via localhost garnet:1 xvnc4viewer garnet:1 So unfortunatly I do not have the same problem. It would be nice to know why you have that problem and I not. Do you have more than 8 characters in the password?
