I wasn't totally sure that it's hal, but it seems to be the only thing that 
showed up in top(1) that coincides with the clicking. I tried shutting off 
everything I could think of and checked obvious cases like log files being 
written to, etc.

I asked around and someone suggested that it might be the ext3 filesystem 
updating a timestamp in the superblock. That seems more likely than the hal 
thing I guess. So consider my problem fixed.

It still seems like a waste for hal to be checking so often. It's too bad it 
has to poll at all, but I guess there's no way around that? I also realize the 
frequency is so that users can be quickly prompted when a CD is inserted.

It would be nice to have a way to turn this feature down or off if you don't 
want it. Consider this a wishlist request for that.
