At the start of the file /etc/modules.conf it reads:

    #
    # Please do not edit this file directly. If you want to change or add
    # anything please take a look at the files in /etc/modutils and read

    #

However manual page of update-modules(8) reads:

   DESCRIPTION
update-modules is an obsolete command. In its current form it
will exe- cute /sbin/update-modules.modutils (the old
update-modules program pro- vided by the modutils package) if
it exists and do nothing else.
