In fact, there was an upgrade of xserver-xorg-core from version 1:1.0.2-9 to 1:1.1.1-3 without any upgrade of xserver-xorg-video-ati.
I got the same problem with fglrx and fbdev. The bug seems to be related to sloppy version dependencies between the two packages. This morning upgrade should not have been possible. A new build of xserver-xorg-video-* and fglrx-server seems to be required but I do not have the tools to do it and test. I hope it helps.
