Regarding your first sentence, this was speculated said during the discussion
of the problem but currently it's clear that there will be no
mysql-server-4.1 in the next Debian release but that mysql-server-5.0 will
abort installation before changing anything if it finds any .ISM files
under /var/lib/mysql/. (A user should then still be able to reinstall his
old mysql-server-4.0 or 4.1 version even if the rest is already updated to 
Debian 4.0 "etch")
