I looked some stuff up and apparently the variant I had configured didn't match up exactly. So I edited it and then edited gnome settings. My updated information is: xprop -root | grep XKB _XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xfree86", "pc104", "us_intl", "", "" _XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xfree86", "pc104", "us_intl", "", "" gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb layouts = [us_intl] model = pc104 overrideSettings = false options = [] update_handlers = []
This gets rid of the annoying error messages but still complains about a discrepancy between gnome and X settings, asking me to choose between the two. I guess the original problem occurred because once set the gnome configuration is not updated, resulting in the discrepancy.
