I tried using sound-juicer along with the the LAME plugin, following the directions in the sound-juicer documentation, which suggests using id3mux. The result was 100-200 byte files containing only id3 tags, but no actual mp3 content. I switched to the id3v2mux plugin using taglib, and that worked.
