Thank you Cameron for the detailed reply and diagnostic ideas. I did indeed get an error when attempting the import command under python.
It turns out that this bug is already reported under python-wxgtk2.6: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=383298 There's a one-character patch to fix it, apparently.
