After make-kpkg --append_to_version -2-686-smp --initrd kernel_image and install I got a kernel with which VESA-framebuffer for console doesn't work with boot potion "vga=791" like the original kernel from Debian package. I get a black screen on all consoles and there is no /dev/fb0 device.
You can built the "official" debian kernel-images using the following commands:
apt-get source kernel-image-2.6.8-i386
cd kernel-image-2.6.8-i386-2.6.8
dpkg-checkbuildeps (that will check for missing build-deps, install them if missing)
fakeroot debian/rules flavours=686-smp binary
Please try it and followup if it does not help.
