As I don't know how kernel detects CD I haven't the faintest what went wrong. Retried from the command line, but did not find anything strange except that /dev/hdc did not exist (but this is probably a side effect). Interestingly, problem is also present in Ubuntu 6.xx server, but _not_ in current stable i386 install, which detected CD drive without problems. I continued with minimal stable, and upgraded to full testing Note: This system is our local experimental system, so can be experimented with.
