I had a quite similar problem. Any characters in Gtk apps weren't anti-aliased,
and some non-ASCII characters weren't visible.

If the problem only occurs in Gtk apps *on KDE*, and if it does not occurs
in newly created user, try the following:
1. delete ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals???.new, if any, then restart KDE.
2. modify ~/.kde/share/config/kdeglobal: set XftAntialias=true in `General'
section.
----
[General]
XftAntialias=true
----
  then restart.

        Yuya.
