Hi,
I get a similar behaviour. I'm using Debian testing distribution with kernel 2.6.16, and I downloaded the drivers from the unstable distribution. Is there a workaround, so I can logout and restart X instead of restarting the computer (I wouldn't mind logging in from a computer in the network). I've tried unloading the module but couldn't obviously. The kernel message is as follows:

------------[ cut here ]------------

BTW, I enjoyed installing the packages, in comparison to the life prior to the packages where installing the ATI drivers was always a process of a few hours, this was a real treat.

        Cheers,
                Yuval.
