Still no progress on my end, but I have not experimented further since July 15th, 2006.  I'm moving cross-country next month, so things are in disarray for a while -- no time to tinker!  Good luck on the bug hunt, I'd love to be kept in the loop.

One more update to add to this.

I installed a minimal x86 install of debian etch to a usb drive yesterday, and installed the lirc packages directly from debian unstable repos.  The non functioning machines in dapper still won't go, and the one functioning laptop from dapper that I have works with  the etch install.

Also -  Erin Simonds <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> is running into the same problem as well.  We conversed over a few emails, and she is using Edgy Eft (latest Ubuntu testing version).  We went as far to try to contact some lirc developers, but no one responded to our emails.  I also sent something to the lirc list a while back, but only received silence.

Thanks for the input, I will forward it to upstream.
