Yes, the error occurs also with -O.  I've compiled perl like twenty times,
trying to find which is the particular optimization that's causing the
problem, but I still haven't been able to find it.  I'm starting to suspect
it's a particular combination of the options that doesn't work if I bisect
them.

In the meantime, Martin is currently working on developing a test case that
allows us to find the problem outside perl, since we believe this is either
a problem in gcc or the libc.
