Hi Paul, I tested this yesterday on my home machine and I couldn't run K3bsetup (for some reason it wouldn't accept my root password). So I haven't been able yet to reproduce your problem.
Are you able to burn CDs successfully if you run K3b as root? If it does work as root but not as a normal user then it's a permission problem (which k3bsetup is supposed to handle).
