I'm afraid I still can't reproduce the problem. It may be related to the
fact you have setup a GTK+ theme or icon theme for the root user.

Could you please provide me some *clear* steps showing how to reproduce
the bug with a fresh new account?

You are not supposed to log in as root. GNOME is not meant to be run as
root, and there's a reason why root logins are disabled in GDM.
