Hi, I think I encountered the same problem yesterday with the version in sarge (7.07.1-9):
The problem is that gs-esp called with -q and -sOUTPUTFILE=- still writes several messages to stdout, so the output is garbled. The "bonus" lines are: %%[ ProductName: ESP Ghostscript ]%% as the first line of the output, and %%[Page: substitued_by_number_of_pages]%% %%[LastPage]%% as the last two. This verbosity causes severe interoperability problems with programs, so I think the severity of this bus should be raised.
