this is just to let you know that I still see the problem. I tried
to run sshd under gdb, but this failed until now due to some thread
related problems :-(
For the record: A thread in debian-user, starting at http://
lists.debian.org/debian-user/2005/02/msg03012.html , describes the
same (or at least a very similar) problem. The poster there was able
to work around the problem by setting
UsePAM no
PasswordAuthentication yes
It turns out that this works for me, too. But as soon as I set
"UsePAM yes", it stops working again. The poster's machine was also
an UML host (mine is too), maybe this is somehow causing the problem?
Help would still be very welcome.
