Hello,

I think that flame war is not very productive. I have some remarks and a
plea.

Is RTFM to print to a simple parallel printer a answer that will satisfy
users? I am quite sure its not.

As a user I expect that printing to a parallel printer just has to work
when it has been configured once. And configuring the printer does not
have to require adding modules to /etc/modules.

Right now I have to do the following to be able to print:

1) Add this to /etc/modules:

parport_pc
lp

Yes, udev (0.093-1) doesn't even detect the parport in my IBM ThinkPad T23
anymore! I remember a time where I already used udev and those lines both
were not required.

2) I have to manually restart the printer in CUPS.

3) But thats not enough. I also have to change the rights for /dev/lp0
(http://bugs.debian.org/378147)

4) And fix KDE (http://bugs.debian.org/373720). Fortunately only once.

5) And the printer configuration for CUPS (http://bugs.debian.org/373722).
Fortunately also only once.

Thats absolutely ridiculous for a stable Debian release. Right now it
isn't yet marked stable but as I understand its stearing towards a
release.

If it remains that way until its released in Etch it is a clear
statement: "Desktop user, keep out of here! Only use Debian when you are
a real geek..."

Is that want you want to achieve? As a user I couldn't care less about how
printing works - I just want that it works. Out of the box. I now spent
again almost one hour to print a single sheet of paper - once again - and
its not that I haven't enough other stuff to do. I know thats the price
for using Debian Testing/Unstable at times. But it should not be the
price for using Debian Stable as otherwise I can understand everyone who
switches to a distribution where it just works.

Right now printing in Debian Etch/Sid is *fundamentally* broken in several
areas at once. Until Stable it needs to be fixed!

So please, Marco, consider making parallel printing work out of the box
with udev. I always thought that udev was meant to make things work out
of the box and not to complicate things that worked before (like /dev/lp0
in a static /dev).

I will happily test any changes that go in the direction of making it just
work.

Regards,
